The Power Of Pain

Isn’t it weird how we’ll go for months, even years without making a change, then one day just make a decision to take massive action and change our life?

I’ve been thinking about that today.

When I look at the turning points in my life, most of them have come on the back of massive pain.

When I was at the heaviest I ever was, I was doing the usual yo-yo dieting, over-exercising, and putting all the weight back on again. I had been doing it for years. Problem is, that top weight number kept creeping up and it was taking me longer and more effort to lose the weight. But nothing changes. I just kept doing the same old. Then, one day I experienced MASSIVE pain. My sister sent me a picture she took of me and my best friend at a recent family gathering. I was shocked. I barely recognized myself. I was fat. I was puffy. I looked so unhealthy. Even then, I was in denial. I checked other recent pictures. O.M.G. I got that stab to the heart feeling. I experienced significant pain. I was fat. The picture below on the left was me at my highest weight. The picture on the right is me a few years later. That was when I changed my life, got off the yo-yo diet hamster wheel, and never looked back.

Before that, I wasn’t in enough pain to take action and make the change I wanted.

I used to fear those times of massive pain or embarrassment. I shied away from them and didn’t want to face them.

Plus, the pleasure. The pleasure of starting my day with a sugary coffee drink and pastry from the local coffee bucks, the bowl of my favorite ice cream on the couch at night after dinner, the fast-food drive-through justified by the convenience of a busy life. Pleasure. Had a bad day? Have your favorite snack! Feeling overwhelmed and busy? Go through a drive-through. Bored? Eat! Seeking pleasure, running away from pain. Stuffing our negative emotions down with food that makes us feel happy (in the moment).

But I’ve come to realize, those times of massive pain are the times when I create the most positive change in my life, and in order to get away from pain, the solution is not to seek pleasure. It is to seek pain. Do the thing which you have avoided.

I think it’s just how we’re wired as human beings. If something is just uncomfortable but bearable we don’t do anything about it.

It isn’t until we decide we will not tolerate it anymore that we take action to change our situation.

So now I seek that pain out. If I want to make a change but I don’t have that feeling like “I absolutely must do this”, then I figure out a way I can light a fire under my ass to take action.

Seek pain. Always used the excuse that you can't afford it to get a fitness and health coach? Pay for it. Yep, you may even go into credit card debt and end up paying 3 times as much. That's painful, but it is the thing you have been avoiding.

Seek pain. Always said you would NEVER give up your bread and your beer until someone clawed them out of your dead hands? Go cold turkey. Seek pain.

Seek pain. Always avoided cardio because you hate how out of breath you get and hey, you don't ever need to run anywhere anyway right? that is what cars are for! Seek pain. Get your ass out every other day and go for a run.

But those hot fresh donuts on your way to work are so yummy, and you ALWAYS get them because you arrive in a good mood at work on a sugar high. Seek pain. No donuts for you! Food is not your psychologist and is not responsible for your emotional state. Stop using food as a crutch for your crappy attitude.

When we connect massive embarrassment or pain with inaction, all of a sudden we become very motivated to make things happen.
